The Romanization of Christianity – Continued
The earliest Christians were known more for what they did – the work of justice and charity – than what they believed. But as Christianity allied itself more and more to the Roman Empire, its focus shifted away from the work of justice and more toward only the work of charity. By the fifth century CE Christians were known more for what they believed than what they did. In this two-part series we will discuss what Christianity gained – and what it lost – as it became increasingly Romanized.
Mark Etling, PhD teaches theology at Saint Louis University’s School for Professional Studies. He also gives presentations on Scripture and Christian history at the Shrine, for Oasis-St. Louis and at various parishes in the St. Louis and Belleville dioceses. Mark and his wife Alicia live in the Lafayette Square neighborhood in St. Louis. If you would like Mark to speak at your parish or organization, please go to his website: http://www.marketling.org
