The story of Christmas in our time is filled with joy and wonderment about the birth of Jesus.
Mary and Joseph are visited by angels; the birth of the Child is announced to shepherds by the heavenly choirs;
astrologers from the East come to worship Jesus because they have seen his star; his life is threatened by the treachery of King Herod.
Yet in their original context the Christmas stories are risky, even dangerous tales of treason against the Roman Empire,
and the beginning of the restoration of God’s sovereignty in Israel.

In this two-part series we will explore the dramatic stories of Jesus’ birth as told in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.

Mark Etling is an adjunct associate professor at the School for Professional Studies at St. Louis University.
