The Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, in conjunction with King’s House Retreat & Renewal Center, is happy to provide another video study series this coming Fall.
In honor of St. Francis of Assisi, this four-week course is entitled, “Saints & Animals,” and will be presented on video by Br. William Short, OSF. Fr. Mark Dean, OMI of King’s House will host this series.

This series provides a sampling of saint-and-animal stories up to the lifetime of St. Francis (1182-1226). Br. Short has provided English translations of the Latin originals to help make these often-charming legends more accessible to a wider audience. This will also help to familiarize you with some little-known figures who are well worth knowing including saints Godric and Guthlac, Gudila, Menna and Afra. They are hardly household names today, but once were well-known as examples of Christian sanctity.
These stories of saints and animals in this course are designed to offer people today an idea of how earlier Christian generations understood their fellow creatures as significant, communicating important messages of their Creator.

Br. William Short is a Franciscan Friar and Professor of Christian Spirituality at the Franciscan School of Theology and Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California.
Over the years he has published several books on Franciscan literature and spirituality, including Poverty and Joy: The Franciscan Tradition (Orbis Books, 1999), and (with Regis Armstrong OFM Cap and J. Wayne Hellmann, OFM Conv.), Francis of Assisi: Early Documents, 3 vols. (New City Press, 2001)
